In a city deemed one of the best in the world, South Yarra leads the pack. It’s the way the suburb leaves no stone unturned, combining all that Melbourne is famous for and presenting it in its ultimate form. For nature lovers, it offers the Botanical Gardens, Fawkner Park and the Yarra River. For discerning epicureans, Australia’s most critically acclaimed restaurants call South Yarra home. For fashion and design, world-famous Chapel Street shares the coveted 3141 postcode. Bursting at the seams with cultural offerings, South Yarra is an inner-city oasis offering a vibrant way of life – as well as room to breathe when you need it.
South Yarra is its most beautiful in the early hours of the day, when the river and gardens are illuminated by that glorious morning light. Head out for a walk, jog or bike ride along the Main Yarra Trail – located just 300m from Riviera – or meander your way around ‘The Tan’, coffee in hand.
Afterwards, rest and refuel at one of many local cafes (South Yarra is quite possibly the brunch capital of Melbourne). If you’re on the go, Baker D. Chirico is the perfect place to pick up a croissant, coffee and loaf of bread. If you’ve got more time, settle in at The Gilson for blueberry pancakes and garden views; Mr Bond for Italian espresso and oven-baked eggs; or The Stables of Como for brunch classics amongst historic grounds.
Later in the day, when the sun sits high in the sky, South Yarra becomes a hub for leisurely lunches and afternoon drinks. Domain Road boasts a world-class selection of dining spots, including The Botanical, Gilson and beloved Parisian institution Entrecôte – home to our city’s finest steak frites.
For decades, South Yarra has been synonymous with retail therapy – another quintessential afternoon activity. Along Chapel Street and Toorak Road, high-end boutiques combine with beauty emporiums, homeware stores and gourmet providores. From cult label Dinosaur Designs to the inimitable Scanlan Theodore, this fashion-forward locale has mastered the art of stylish living.
South Yarra does dinnertime in a very distinctive way – it’s all about elegant interiors, critically acclaimed chefs, lively atmosphere and inventive food. Along Domain Road, choose between Matilda by Scott Pickett, beloved seafood restaurant Bacash, and the award-winning Botanical Hotel. Off Chapel Street, there’s authentic Sicilian bistro Thirty Eight Chairs, or head to Bar Carolina for wood fired Venetian dishes.
After dinner, catch a movie at Palace Cinemas Como, a long-standing part of South Yarra’s cultural fabric. Boasting plush decor and a glamorous bespoke bar, the cinema provides an elevated cinematic experience, screening everything from commercial release and art-house films to operas and ballets.
